We without question accept Freedom of Religion.
This is seemingly obviously correct. But, is it?
We learned the hard way not everything called a vaccine is actually a vaccine. Perhaps not everything called a religion is one.
Islam has aspects of it that identify it as a religion. But it also is a political system. Is that aspect of it part of a religion? I would say, no. Should it be protected? No. In my opinion.
Hinduism is a religion. But in India they don’t have separation of Church and State. Hinduism, and its precursor the ancient Vedic religion, has medicine, architecture, education etc. all as part of it. Sati, the ancient practice of burning a widow alive on her husband’s funeral pyre, is not allowed here (or in India). Neither is Sthapatya Veda, ancient Vedic architecture, allowed to override local zoning and national building codes.
There are aspects of Islam that should not be protected by 1A. No one questions many aspects of Christianity as to not be protected actions. The OT delineates who is allowed to be a slave and who isn’t. We don’t allow that. Or having multiple wives. No Hindu could override our laws by citing the Laws of Manu.
Someone has to take a case to court against Hinduism. Then Christianity. Easy peasy wins. Have the court define what is meant by Freedom of Religion. Then, do Islam.
The Courts have to delineate what is being protected when we allow freedom of religion. If a religion says homosexuals should be killed is that protected? If a religion says two women as witnesses are the equivalent of one male, is that protected? Halal butchery is against our cruelty to animals laws. Should it be allowed?
When a religious belief is in direct contradiction of our laws it cannot be protected. Each religion should be pared down to protected and unprotected aspects.
Protect some aspects. That is important. Call your God what you want. Worship as you want. Live as you will. But not where it interferes in the rights of others.
Islam says to kill the unbeliever. That cannot be protected. Sharia cannot be allowed ever.
This would be the biggest gift we could give the average Muslim. To redefine it as to outlaw the most abhorrent aspects. Those aspects might eventually become as we view the worst aspects of Christianity and Judaism. We don’t allow killing of witches. It is not a huge sin to see your wife naked while she is menstruating. We don’t allow maidservants to be sexually available to the Master. Etc.
The average Muslim could then jettison baggage he doesn’t believe in nor want to live by. And allow him to still be Muslim.
Excellent!
Allah Akbar!!
